The G7 defense ministers issued a joint statement reiterating their support for Israel and condemning Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks. The statement also addressed escalating tensions in the Middle East, including concerns about Lebanon and Iranian-backed groups.

The Group of Seven (G7) defense ministers reaffirmed their support for Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza and condemned the attacks launched by Hamas earlier in October. In a joint statement, the ministers underscored their commitment to finding a pathway towards a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all captives, and a "significant and sustained increase in the flow of humanitarian assistance" into the war-torn region.

The ministers expressed grave concern about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate ramp-up of aid to civilians caught in the crossfire. They also reiterated their support for a "sustainable pathway" toward a two-state solution, which remains a long-standing international goal for peace in the region.

Additionally, the G7 raised concerns over instability in Lebanon, warning about the potential threats to UN peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon. The statement also condemned attacks by Houthi forces on vessels in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.

The ministers also criticized Iran's actions, calling out Tehran for direct attacks against Israel on April 13 and October 1, 2024, while urging the country to stop providing support to nonstate actors such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.

The statement, however, made no mention of Israel’s military conduct in Gaza, where more than 42,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed, and much of the enclave has been reduced to rubble. Humanitarian organizations have warned of a dire situation in northern Gaza, where civilians are facing starvation as the conflict drags on.

The omission of details regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza has sparked criticism, as some observers point to the massive scale of destruction and human suffering in the enclave. Despite this, the G7 defense ministers emphasized their commitment to seeking a resolution that would promote regional stability while addressing the humanitarian needs of those affected by the ongoing violence.
