Seven years ago, a dream that once seemed far-fetched became a defining reality. On August 30, 2018, the Maldives witnessed the opening of its most ambitious and transformative infrastructure project — the Sinamalé Bridge, also known as the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge. Today, as the nation celebrates the 7th anniversary of this engineering marvel, the bridge stands tall as a symbol of connectivity, development, and international collaboration.

From Vision to Reality

The realization of the Sinamalé Bridge owes much to visionary leadership and international partnership. At the heart of this monumental transformation was Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, then Minister of Housing and Infrastructure — now serving as the President of the Maldives. Dr. Muizzu played a pivotal role in overseeing the project from its conception to its successful execution, demonstrating exceptional leadership, technical knowledge, and commitment to national development. Under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, President Xi’s government extended strong diplomatic and financial support, laying the foundation for one of the most iconic infrastructure collaborations in Maldivian history. An Engineering Marvel

Spanning 2 kilometers in total length and 20.3 meters in width, the Sinamalé Bridge connects three key islands: Malé, Hulhulé (home to Velana International Airport), and Hulhumalé. Of the total length, 1.39 kilometers stretch directly over the ocean, supported by massive piers anchored in the seabed.

Designed and constructed by China Harbor Engineering Company — a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company — the project overcame challenging marine conditions including deep waters, coral reefs, and unpredictable tides. Yet, thanks to modern engineering, international expertise, and strong leadership, the project was completed 25 days ahead of schedule.

The bridge features four traffic lanes — two for motor vehicles and two for bicycles and pedestrians — dramatically improving mobility across the capital region.

A $300 Million Investment in the Nation’s Future

With a total project cost of $300 million, the bridge was made possible through a blend of international cooperation and national commitment. China contributed a $100 million grant and $170 million in concessional loans, while the Maldivian government invested $30 million — a clear signal of its dedication to uplifting infrastructure and economic opportunity for its citizens.
