The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has announced an extension of the application deadline for its youth-focused fishermen training program, now open until September 17, 2025.

The initiative is part of the Transforming Fisheries Sector in South West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project, supported by the World Bank, and aims to encourage greater youth participation in the Maldives’ fishing industry by providing structured training and hands-on experience.

According to the Ministry, the three-month program, scheduled to run from September to November 2025, is designed to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to modern fishing practices. The training includes direct involvement in pole-and-line skipjack tuna fishing operations — a cornerstone of the Maldivian fishing tradition — under the mentorship of some of the country’s most experienced skippers.

The program is targeted at youth under the age of 24 who are not currently registered in the national fishermen’s registry. Participants will receive a daily allowance for the duration of the training.

In its official statement, the Ministry emphasized the strategic importance of attracting younger generations to the fisheries sector, citing declining youth engagement as a growing concern. The program aims to bridge this gap by fostering interest and providing viable career pathways within the industry.

Applicants are required to submit the following documents via email:

  • Completed application form
  • Copy of national ID card
  • Letter of consent from a parent or guardian (for applicants under 18)

The Ministry encourages all eligible individuals with an interest in fishing and marine livelihoods to take advantage of this opportunity.
