India is aiming for significant growth in its aviation sector, aspiring to become a "Viksit" (developed) nation by 2047. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu recently announced plans to increase the number of airports from the current 157 to 350 to enhance tourism.
Speaking at an event to celebrate World Tourism Day, Naidu noted the remarkable rise in air travel, with the number of travelers landing in India growing from 4.6 crore (46 million) in 2014 to nearly 7 crore (70 million) today. Importantly, more than 35% of these arrivals are for leisure and recreational purposes.
The minister highlighted efforts to connect "unserved" and "underserved" airports, focusing on linking travelers to stunning landscapes and lesser-known destinations. Plans also include improving seaplane and helicopter services to diversify travel options.
Naidu emphasized the essential role of air travel in attracting foreign tourists and called for collaborative efforts to fully leverage India's tourism potential.
