Farmers’ Day: Food Security and Economic Resilience

October 15 is observed as Farmers’ Day in the Maldives every year. The main purpose of this day is to recognise and appreciate the important role played by hardworking Maldivian farmers in ensuring national food security and strengthening the country’s economic resilience.

The Maldives relies heavily on other countries for a significant portion of its food supply. As a result, global market disruptions and challenges affecting transportation and shipping can have a considerable impact on the country. Therefore, agriculture is an essential sector for ensuring national food security. Reducing dependence on foreign countries by producing food locally is directly linked to the country’s independence and self-reliance.

Among the major challenges facing Maldivian farmers today are limited land availability, declining soil quality and difficulties caused by changing weather patterns. However, modern technology is increasingly providing solutions to these challenges. These include the use of modern farming systems such as hydroponics and vertical farming in areas with limited space, adopting environmentally friendly organic farming practices, and using smart agriculture technologies.

One of the government’s key policies is to reduce imports of certain commonly consumed fruits and vegetables that can be cultivated locally, while creating opportunities for domestic production. In addition, efforts are being made to provide farmers with the financial assistance and training they need, as well as to establish accessible systems that enable them to bring their produce to market and sell it.
