NASHEED WARNS EAGLE HILLS CONTROVERSY COULD HURT UAE INVESTMENT
22 October 2026 - 19:38

Former President Mohamed Nasheed warns that attacking Eagle Hills Chairman Mohamed Alabbar over the Rasmalé development project could harm the Maldives’ economic interests and discourage investment from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In a message sent to the MDP National Council’s WhatsApp group, Nasheed says such actions could also lead to a suspension of existing UAE investments in the Maldives.
He also appears to caution party members against speaking against the party’s position, recalling the expulsion of former Maafannu Central MP Ali Azim from the MDP after he spoke against party policy.
Nasheed has previously clarified that he does not oppose the Rasmalé project itself, but has expressed concern over its location within the Malé area.
Meanwhile, the MDP has stated that it welcomes foreign investors but has raised concerns over discrepancies between information officially disclosed by Eagle Hills and details released by the government regarding the transaction.
The party has called on the government to clarify these discrepancies, stressing the need for greater transparency surrounding the major development project.
