The proposed 2027 national budget allocates MVR 10.2 billion to the healthcare sector to ensure quality healthcare services and safeguard public wellbeing and the country’s future.
Presenting the proposed budget, Finance Minister Hassan Zareer said the government would prioritize establishing a system that ensures quality healthcare services are accessible across all regions of the Maldives.
As part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery, the government has decided to establish the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group, bringing together tertiary-level hospitals and hospitals being upgraded to that level. The initiative is expected to strengthen efforts to improve the quality of treatment available to patients across the country.
The minister said the budget also prioritizes establishing a centralized system for procuring medical consumables and equipment required by hospitals. In addition, the government plans to strengthen medicine procurement through State Pharma to reduce costs and improve access to essential medicines and medical consumables.
The proposed budget also includes measures to improve healthcare services across the regions by upgrading diagnostic facilities, including echocardiography, X-ray, CT scan and MRI services.
Furthermore, efforts will be made to expand dental care, cancer treatment, women's healthcare, and maternal and reproductive health services. The government also plans to further expand specialized healthcare services at the regional level.
