Budget 2027 Includes Plans to Develop a Picnic Island in Every Atoll

The proposed 2027 State Budget includes plans to develop a designated picnic island in every atoll of the Maldives, Finance Minister Hassan Zareer has said.

Speaking while presenting the proposed budget to Parliament, Zareer said building a healthy and resilient society remains a key priority for the government. He explained that the initiative aims to provide families and friends with more opportunities to spend quality time together and enjoy recreational activities.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of preparing for climate change and diversifying the national economy to support sustainable long-term development.

In this regard, the 2027 Budget will prioritise initiatives such as the Climate Adaptation Model Island Project, which aims to strengthen climate resilience and ensure the environmental sustainability of islands across the country.

The proposed 2027 State Budget totals MVR 59.7 billion, making it MVR 4.5 billion lower than the budget approved for 2026.
