Budget 2027 Introduces AI-Powered Traffic Management and Strengthens Digital Infrastructure

The government plans to modernize Malé’s traffic management system using artificial intelligence (AI) and strengthen the Maldives’ digital infrastructure, Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer has said.

Speaking during the presentation of the proposed 2027 State Budget to Parliament, the Minister outlined key projects aimed at advancing the country’s technological capabilities and modernising government services.

As part of these initiatives, the government plans to establish a National Sovereign Cloud Data Centre to securely store and manage state data. The Minister also highlighted plans to introduce a modern Digital Identification System, or smart card system, to make public services more accessible and convenient.

Addressing traffic congestion and other transport challenges in Malé, Zareer emphasised the importance of using technology to develop long-term solutions. He said work is underway to establish a Smart Traffic Enforcement System that will use AI to digitalize and manage the capital’s traffic system.

In addition, the 2027 Budget will include provisions for implementing the Greater Malé Transport Mobility Plan, aimed at improving the efficiency of the transport system.

These initiatives are expected to strengthen the Maldives’ digital infrastructure and make public services more efficient and accessible to citizens.
