Government Spends Record MVR 11.7 Billion on Debt Repayments in 2026

Finance and Public Enterprises Minister Moosa Zameer has stated that 2026 is a historic year for the Maldives, with the government allocating a record amount from the national budget to reduce the debt burden inherited from previous administrations.

Presenting the proposed budget for 2027, Minister Zameer said the government was fully prepared to meet the substantial debt repayments that had fallen due. He noted that MVR 10.4 billion had already been repaid, with total debt repayments projected to reach MVR 11.7 billion by the end of this year. He emphasized that these repayments would be made without taking on additional debt.

The Minister also highlighted that the amount required for debt repayments is expected to decline significantly in 2027, following the repayment and settlement of debts this year. The government estimates that MVR 4.5 billion will be required for debt repayments next year.

Minister Zameer further noted that the government's firm measures to manage debt had strengthened the confidence of international financial institutions and contributed to improved ratings for the Maldives from credit rating agencies.

He described the debt repayment effort as an important and successful step towards reducing the financial burden on future generations.
