MP Hameed: Councils Are Not Separate Governments, Must Implement State Policies

Kudahuvadhoo MP Hussain Hameed has criticized some local councilors, particularly those elected on the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) ticket, for allegedly acting as though councils are independent governments with separate governing authority.
Speaking on Mendhuru TV’s Mauloo program about the role of local councils, MP Hameed said some councilors believe they can openly oppose government policies and work against the government, regardless of their responsibilities.
He said public dissatisfaction was growing in some islands because certain councilors were blaming the central government for various issues instead of fulfilling their own responsibilities.
Hameed emphasized that local councils are responsible for implementing government policies and are not separate governing bodies with independent authority to act outside national policies.
He also said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC-led government has the final say on national decisions and would not make decisions that cause hardship for the people of any island.
