Former Speaker of Parliament and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been remanded in custody for 30 days following his arrest over allegations of sexually abusing a child under the age of 18.

Police confirmed that Shahid was arrested at 9:59 p.m. yesterday, under a court order, from the apartment where he resides in Hulhumalé.

Shahid, 64, previously held several senior positions in public office, including Speaker of the People's Majlis, Foreign Minister and President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prior to his arrest, Shahid issued a statement on X, describing the allegations circulating against him as politically motivated and entirely false. He also urged the public not to spread unsubstantiated claims, stating that the allegations were aimed at damaging his personal reputation.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for the Hithadhoo Central constituency, Ahmed Azan, has called for a thorough investigation into the allegations and justice for the alleged victim.

Reacting to the police statement confirming Shahid's arrest, Azan described the news as deeply concerning and saddening.

He expressed hope that the relevant authorities would conduct a full investigation into the allegations and ensure justice for the affected party.

The arrest comes at a time when Shahid is campaigning for the MDP presidential ticket.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
