Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has called for the Commonwealth to become a stronger, more modern and inclusive organization that is better equipped to respond to the challenges of today’s world.
Speaking at the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting ahead of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Minister Iruthisham stressed the importance of unity and collective action among member states in addressing global challenges.
She said the Commonwealth must continue to evolve into a more progressive and responsive organization to achieve its shared goals.
The Minister also highlighted the Commonwealth’s role in supporting Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly in strengthening economic resilience and securing climate finance. She emphasized the need to reform the existing international financial system to better address the vulnerabilities faced by member countries.
Calling for greater equality among member states, Iruthisham said decisions should take into account the different sizes and capacities of countries. She also stressed the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for all members when appointing individuals to senior positions within the organization.
The Minister reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to working closely with the Commonwealth and its member states to advance the organization's shared priorities.
The Commonwealth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held ahead of CHOGM, provides an important platform for member countries to strengthen partnerships and coordinate their efforts on common challenges.
