MP Latheef Says MDP’s Mid-Year School Calendar Shift Burdened Parents and Students

Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed has criticized the previous MDP administration for shifting the start of the academic year to the middle of the year, saying the decision placed a significant burden on parents and students.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on amendments to the Education Act proposed by government-aligned MP Dr. Anaara Naeem, Latheef said the change was introduced without adequate research or consultation with education experts.
He said Maldivian families traditionally place great importance on education, with parents and students preparing enthusiastically for the new academic year, which previously began in January or February.
According to Latheef, the mid-year school calendar disrupted this preparation, including the customary arrangements for new uniforms, shoes and other school supplies, and reduced the excitement surrounding the beginning of a new academic year.
He argued that the previous administration made the change without sufficiently considering its impact on families or the wider education system.
Latheef welcomed the proposed amendment, which seeks to ensure that the academic year begins no later than January or February, describing it as an important and necessary reform.
