In his latest Mann Ki Baat radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a cautionary message about a new and sophisticated scam dubbed "digital arrest." This fraudulent scheme preys on unsuspecting individuals by falsely threatening them with arrest unless they pay a fee. Prime Minister Modi clarified that no government agency operates in this manner, stressing that any demand for money or threats over the phone is an unmistakable sign of fraud.
“There is no legal system called ‘digital arrest’; it’s purely fraud, deceit, a criminal enterprise by those who are enemies of society,” Modi stated. He underscored that government and law enforcement agencies do not operate in such a manner, urging citizens to stay vigilant against falling prey to scammers.
To counteract these threats, investigative agencies are working closely with state governments, and a National Cyber Coordination Centre has been established to enhance cyber intelligence and streamline coordination between regions. The Centre aims to detect and disrupt cybercrimes like the “digital arrest” scam, which has been reported in increasing numbers across the country.
The Prime Minister also called upon schools and colleges to participate actively in raising awareness among students. “We can only fight this challenge through collective efforts in society,” he emphasized, encouraging educational institutions to incorporate digital safety and scam awareness into their curriculum to protect young people from cyber threats.
As technology grows increasingly integral to daily life, Modi’s message serves as a reminder to remain cautious and informed. By fostering awareness and digital literacy, the nation can collectively combat the menace of cyber fraud and safeguard its citizens.
