The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched a four-day training programme aimed at empowering human rights activists across the nation. The Human Rights Defenders Training Programme, running from November 4 to November 7, will provide 25 selected individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect human rights within their communities.

In collaboration with Transparency Maldives (TM) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the training seeks to raise public awareness about human rights, encourage state accountability, and cultivate a strong network of human rights advocates. According to HRCM, this initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that individuals are equipped to secure the rights of those who may have been deprived of them.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) defines human rights defenders (HRDs) as individuals who work peacefully to promote civil and political rights, as well as economic, social, and cultural rights. HRCM’s programme is designed to prepare participants to address these issues effectively and engage meaningfully with the community.

“This training is crucial for building a strong foundation of human rights advocacy in the Maldives,” stated a representative from HRCM. “By educating and empowering individuals, we hope to create a ripple effect that enhances public understanding of human rights and encourages collective action.”

This is not the first time HRCM has conducted such a training programme. Previous sessions were held in Kulhudhuffushi City in 2021 and Fuvahmulah City in 2023, reflecting the Commission’s ongoing commitment to human rights education across the country.

As the programme unfolds, participants will engage in various activities designed to deepen their understanding of human rights issues and develop practical advocacy skills. HRCM anticipates that these trainees will collaborate with each other, the Commission, and relevant agencies to amplify their impact in their respective communities.

The Human Rights Defenders Training Programme underscores the Maldives’ commitment to fostering a culture of human rights and ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard and protected.
