MDP Chairperson Asserts Party Will Not Overthrow Government, Focuses on Accountability

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has emphasized that his party’s efforts will not be aimed at toppling the democratically elected government, but rather at holding it accountable. Speaking at a rally in preparation for the 'In Defence of the Constitution' event set for Tuesday, Fayyaz criticized the incumbent government’s policies, claiming they greatly inconvenience the public. He also accused the ruling party of altering the Constitution to suit their own interests, a move he argued undermines the work MDP had done in 2008 to establish the current Constitution.
Fayyaz explained that while the party had attempted to reason with the government through various platforms, their efforts had been unproductive. He stressed that the party’s aim is to hold the government accountable within the law, whether through rallies or demonstrations, reflecting the widespread public sentiment that it is time for a change in leadership.
