In an unprecedented political crisis, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has publicly apologized for his attempt to impose martial law, a move that sparked outrage and calls for his impeachment.

“This emergency martial law declaration stemmed from my desperation as the ultimate responsible party for state affairs,” Yoon said in a brief two-minute address. “I am deeply sorry and sincerely apologize to the citizens who must have been greatly shocked.”

The controversial declaration, announced late Tuesday night, accused the opposition Democratic Party of “anti-state activities” and sympathizing with North Korea. Yoon cited their recent motions to impeach top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal as justification. However, the decree was overturned within six hours, as lawmakers bypassed soldiers stationed at the National Assembly to unanimously strike it down.

Yoon’s actions have drawn sharp criticism across the nation, reigniting memories of South Korea’s painful past under military dictatorships. Protests have erupted nationwide, with opposition figures and citizens calling for the president’s immediate resignation.

Han Dong-hoon, leader of Yoon’s ruling People Power Party, has also joined the chorus of dissent. In a dramatic statement, Han declared the president’s resignation “inevitable” and said Yoon must be suspended immediately to prevent further damage to the nation.

Pressure continues to mount as an impeachment vote in parliament looms this weekend. Yoon has promised to take full legal and political responsibility, assuring the public there will be “no second attempt” at martial law.

South Korea now stands at a political crossroads, with its democratic institutions facing a crucial test amid this unfolding crisis.
