Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is reportedly on the run after opposition fighters entered the capital, Damascus, marking a significant shift in the country's ongoing civil war. As opposition forces surged into the heart of the city, citizens took to the streets in celebration, hailing the fall of the Assad regime and declaring the dawn of a “new era.”
Hadi al-Bahra, leader of the Syrian opposition coalition based overseas, declared that Damascus was "free of al-Assad" and congratulated Syrians on the momentous development. The opposition also called on Syrians living abroad to return and join in rebuilding the country.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, however, remained in his home and expressed willingness to cooperate with the opposition, stressing the importance of maintaining the continuity of public institutions and services during this critical transition.
Meanwhile, Abu Mohamed al-Julani, head of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, one of the main opposition factions, issued orders to fighters to avoid targeting public institutions and essential services, signaling a tentative approach to governance during the transition. The political and military situation in Syria remains fluid as opposition forces consolidate control over the capital.
