Former Chairman of the Elections Commission (EC), Fuad Thaufeeq, has received the backing of the Maldivian Parliament for his appointment as the country's new Ambassador to Thailand. The nomination, put forward by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, was read in Parliament on November 25, and Fuad secured the endorsement with a unanimous vote of 58 members on Monday afternoon. This approval followed the Foreign Relations Committee’s recommendation a week earlier.

Fuad Thaufeeq’s tenure as EC chairman concluded on November 23, after he completed the maximum two five-year terms allowed. His career in public service spans back to 2008, when he became a member of the Maldives' first-ever Elections Commission, established following the adoption of the new Constitution. Fuad served two separate terms at the EC—2008-2014 and 2019-2024. In addition to his work at the Elections Commission, he has held positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Secretariat, contributing to his extensive diplomatic experience.
