Foreign secretaries from Bangladesh and India met in Dhaka on Monday to discuss growing tensions between the two nations, exacerbated by political instability in Bangladesh and recent violence involving the Hindu minority.
The high-level talks, led by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Jashim Uddin, focused on several key issues, including the fallout from the August departure of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina into exile in India. The political upheaval has raised concerns over the stability of bilateral relations.
The arrest of Hindu leader Chinmoy Das Prabhu under Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has also strained ties. Prabhu's arrest, along with increasing attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, has triggered violent protests. These have led to incidents such as attacks on Bangladesh’s diplomatic mission in Agartala, Tripura, and flag burnings in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The meeting was the first high-level visit by an Indian official since massive protests marked the end of Hasina’s 15-year rule. Both sides were expected to address the rising tensions, which have threatened to impact regional diplomacy and security.
