Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the Speaker of Parliament and chairperson of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), has demanded a police investigation following comments made by Fayyaz Ismail, the chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Fayyaz's remarks, made during a press briefing on Monday, appeared to incite violence against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Fayyaz, in response to a question about statements made at a recent MDP rally, suggested that "brutality will be met with brutality" and hinted that the Maldivian people would take a "play out of history books" when faced with perceived brutality. He was specifically referring to former President Mohamed Amin Didi, who was deposed and fatally attacked by an angry mob in 1953.

Fayyaz's statement came after a speaker at the MDP rally in Kulhudhuffushi City had called for people to "do to President Muizzu what was done to Amin," referring to Amin Didi's violent overthrow.

In response, Abdul Raheem Abdulla described Fayyaz's remarks as "a clear incitement to terrorism." He emphasized the gravity of the statement, especially coming from a leading figure of the opposition, and called on the authorities to investigate the matter seriously.

The uproar comes as the MDP is preparing for a major rally in Male' later today, focusing on allegations of constitutional violations under the current administration.
