Water Crisis in Gaza: A "Tool of War" Amid Destruction
23 December 2024 - 05:30
The deliberate destruction of Gaza’s water infrastructure has left over two million Palestinians in a desperate struggle for survival, Al Jazeera reported. With the ongoing conflict, access to clean water has become increasingly difficult, forcing individuals to live on less than five liters of water per day.
The search for water has turned into a daily challenge for residents. Shadi Yassin, a displaced Palestinian in central Gaza, shared his plight with Al Jazeera: “We need water for showers, dishes, and cleaning. We also need drinking water, and we can’t easily afford it. The amount of water here is not enough.”
At least 15 Palestinians lost their lives, and 30 others were injured in Israeli airstrikes targeting two schools sheltering displaced people in Gaza on Thursday. Meanwhile, Israel also launched attacks on Houthi sites in Yemen, reportedly killing nine people. These strikes targeted two power stations in Sanaa, as well as ports and an oil facility in Hodeidah, according to local media. The attacks followed Israel’s claim of intercepting a missile launched from Yemen.
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the Yemeni group is prepared for a prolonged conflict with Israel in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
Efforts to address the humanitarian crisis are ongoing. Lisa Grande, the Biden administration’s Middle East aid envoy, reportedly urged Israel to cancel civilian evacuation orders, allow displaced Palestinians to return home, and provide a plan to reduce harm to civilian infrastructure.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel's military operations in Gaza have claimed the lives of at least 45,129 Palestinians and injured 107,338, according to Al Jazeera. In Israel, 1,139 people were killed during Hamas-led attacks on that day, with over 200 individuals taken hostage.
The escalating conflict underscores the severe human cost and growing need for urgent humanitarian intervention.
