Home Minister Denies Claims of Enrolling 18-Year-Olds into PNC Using National Database

15 January 2025 - 09:13
Home Minister Ali Ihsan has firmly denied allegations that the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) party is attempting to enroll every 18-year-old into its membership using the database of the Department of National Registration (DNR). The claims, which were first made by Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey), the Deputy Chairperson of the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), have sparked controversy and debate.
Allegations Originate from MDP Official
In a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter) last night, Waheed alleged that the PNC had obtained information about individuals turning 18 this year from the DNR. He claimed that under Minister Ihsan’s supervision, membership forms were being filled out in these individuals' names and prepared for submission to the Elections Commission (EC) once they reach the age of 18. Waheed further stated that this information was available at the PNC office.
Minister Ihsan Denies Claims
Responding to the allegations, Minister Ihsan reposted Waheed’s statement and categorically denied the claims. He questioned whether such actions were something the previous MDP government had considered doing, implying that the allegations were hypocritical. Ihsan stated that he does not entertain such ideas and dismissed the accusations as falsehoods, adding that he does not have the time or opportunity to respond to such baseless claims.
However, the Minister also suggested that it would be more productive for the MDP to focus on discussing its own policies rather than making unfounded accusations.
Minister Accompanying President on Official Trip
Minister Ihsan made these statements while in Estonia as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing official trip to the country. The timing of the allegations and the Minister’s response have added to the political tension between the ruling PNC and the opposition MDP.
Growing Political Tensions
The allegations come amid heightened political rivalry, with the MDP accusing the PNC of unethical practices to boost its membership. The PNC, on the other hand, has maintained that it is committed to following legal and ethical standards in its membership drives.
As the controversy unfolds, the public awaits further clarification from both parties and relevant authorities. The allegations have raised concerns about the integrity of the political process and the use of national databases, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in political activities.
For now, Minister Ihsan’s denial has put the spotlight back on the MDP, challenging the opposition to provide evidence for its claims or refocus its efforts on constructive political discourse.
