In a significant crackdown on digital sex crimes, the Maldivian police have seized 571 channels on the social messaging app Telegram used for distributing sexually explicit content. The operation, led by the Cyber Crime Center, has also resulted in the detention of three individuals suspected of operating nine of these channels.

The arrested suspects are:

• Ismail Rabeeh, 29, from Silinko, K. Kaashidhoo
• Nasif Ali, 46, from Dhafthar no. 14751, K. Malé
• Zubair Ali, 45, from Bahaaruge, ADh. Mahibadhoo

The police report that these individuals are believed to have created and managed Telegram channels dedicated to distributing sexually explicit photos and videos of both locals and foreigners for financial gain. Zubair and Nasif were detained on August 10, while Rabeeh was arrested on August 20. Their remands were subsequently extended; Zubair's was extended by 15 days on August 30, and Nasif and Rabeeh’s remand was extended by 15 days on September 5.

During the operation, authorities searched 14 digital devices linked to the suspects, uncovering nine Telegram channels operated by them. The seizure occurred on Sunday night.

The investigation revealed that the seized channels were used to distribute a staggering 241,651 sexually explicit images and 86,618 videos, including content featuring minors. Notably, 43 of the channels were identified specifically for distributing child pornography.

The police also discovered that 3,468 individuals had paid to subscribe to these channels, generating approximately MVR 2 million in subscription fees for those running the channels.

In light of these developments, the police have urged individuals who believe their photos or videos have been leaked on social media and who are experiencing blackmail to contact the Cyber Crime Center at 9136262 for assistance.
