Minister Mariya: Agriculture Must Strive for Self-Sufficiency

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Mariyam Mariya, has emphasized the need to build a sustainable, self-sufficient, and competitive agricultural industry in the Maldives.
Speaking at the Conference on Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Ensuring Food Security, jointly organized by the Maldives National University (MNU) and the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), Minister Mariya highlighted the importance of resilience in the sector.
She noted that Maldivian ancestors overcame agricultural challenges through innovation and determination, driven by national spirit and self-reliance. She urged that these values should guide the country’s efforts in strengthening food security.
“Our goal is to establish a sustainable, self-sufficient, and competitive agricultural sector,” she reiterated, stressing the importance of increasing youth and women's participation in the industry to achieve this vision.
