A Delta Air Lines jet carrying 80 people crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, flipping upside down upon landing. Officials confirmed that 18 people were injured in the incident, but no fatalities were reported.
The aircraft, identified as Endeavor Air Flight 4819, was a Bombardier CRJ-900 traveling from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The accident occurred around 2:15 PM local time as the plane was attempting to land at Canada’s busiest airport. Dramatic images from the scene showed passengers evacuating the overturned aircraft amid gusty winds and snowy conditions.
Emergency crews responded immediately, assisting passengers and dousing the aircraft with water as smoke was seen wafting from the fuselage. Fire Chief Todd Aitken stated that the runway was dry and there were no reported crosswind conditions at the time of the crash. However, weather reports indicated strong winds of up to 40 mph.
Among the injured, three individuals were listed in critical condition, including a child, a woman in her 40s, and a man in his 60s. The remaining passengers and crew sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals by ambulance or helicopter.
The cause of the crash remains unknown as investigations are underway. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the inquiry, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. Meanwhile, Toronto Pearson Airport temporarily closed two runways for the emergency response and investigation but has since resumed normal operations.
Delta Air Lines has assured full cooperation with authorities and extended its support to the affected passengers and crew. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
