The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has signed the agreement for the addition of five new islands to its greenhouse program, aimed at boosting sustainable agriculture across the nation. The islands joining the initiative are Hdh. Kumundoo, Hdh. Hanimaadhoo, Sh. Bilehfahi, Sh. Kanditheemu, and Sh. Feydhoo.
These new greenhouses will be dedicated to cultivating cucumbers and tomatoes using advanced coco peat technology, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Dr. Aishath Rameela, the Minister of Agriculture, highlighted that this expansion is part of the ministry’s broader focus on eco-friendly and climate-smart agriculture practices.
During the signing ceremony, Minister Rameela emphasized the use of cutting-edge technology in the new greenhouses, which is designed to support sustainable farming methods. She also outlined the ministry’s goal of engaging the youth in agricultural activities, aiming to foster a new generation of farmers.
Currently, there are 12 islands equipped with greenhouses, with 224 farmers from three atolls already trained in their use. While traditional Maldivian agriculture has primarily focused on cucumbers and melons, the new greenhouses are set to diversify production to include tomatoes, capsicum, and tholhimirus.
This initiative is expected to enhance local food production, reduce reliance on imports, and contribute to environmental sustainability in the Maldives.
