Supreme Court Accepts New Evidence Case; Yameen's Trial Continues

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court agreed to admit new evidence in the case against former President Abdullah Yameen, who is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence. This decision follows the High Court’s earlier overturning of Yameen's conviction for accepting $1 million in bribes and laundering the funds. Despite this, the High Court had rejected the new evidence.

In addition, the Supreme Court has accepted the case of former MP Yousuf Naeem, whose conviction was also quashed by the High Court. Hearings for Naeem’s case have not yet been scheduled, but the Criminal Court is set to resume the trial for Yameen tomorrow.

The political landscape surrounding Yameen’s case has been tense. Despite initially supporting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Yameen has become an outspoken critic of the current administration. The dispute has intensified as Yameen demands a full guarantee of his freedom, while President Muizzu has refrained from intervening in the judiciary. The ongoing political friction underscores the complexities of Yameen's legal and political battles.

Further details on the proceedings and future schedule of both cases are expected to be released in the coming days.
