The Maldives is making significant strides toward launching its long-awaited bunkering services with the successful docking of the MT Marine Bella near Kulhudhuffushi City. This is the second bunkering vessel to arrive, following the first, Marine Angel, which docked on September 9. The MT Marine Bella, brought in by the State Trading Organization (STO), boasts a capacity of 4,000 tonnes and is set to play a crucial role in the upcoming service.

The new bunkering operations will commence in Ihavandhippolhu Atoll, marking a pivotal development in the Maldives' maritime sector. Bunkering, the process of supplying fuel to marine vessels, is anticipated to become a major economic driver for the country. Given its strategic location near key international shipping lanes, the Maldives is well-positioned to become a significant refueling hub. Additionally, the region’s calm seas and shallow waters make it accessible to ships of various sizes.

The Maldives has partnered with Vitol Bunkers, a global leader in maritime energy solutions, to operate these services. The government projects that this new industry will contribute an additional USD 400 million to the national economy, elevating the sector's total value to USD 390 million.

Infrastructure development for the bunkering services is in full swing. An office building in Uligan, Haa Alif Atoll, is set to be inaugurated shortly before the official launch. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is also preparing to reclaim land in the surrounding areas to support further expansion of the service. This expansion is expected to enhance state revenues and create new job opportunities within this emerging industry.

The government views offshore bunkering as a crucial growth area and is focused on ensuring the necessary resources and workforce are in place. By leveraging its geographical advantages and collaborating with international partners, the Maldives aims to establish itself as a key player in the global bunkering sector.
