Rising fears of a broader conflict have intensified as the war in Gaza potentially ignites a second front between Israel and Hezbollah. The well-armed Lebanese militia, which has close ties to Hamas, is situated just across Israel's northern border.

Since the Gaza conflict began in October, the two sides have engaged in frequent cross-border attacks. These hostilities have resulted in casualties on both sides, with Lebanon bearing the brunt of civilian losses. Over 150,000 people have been displaced, seeking refuge in temporary shelters as the violence disrupts daily life.

The situation escalated recently with explosions reported across Lebanon on Tuesday. This development followed warnings from Israeli leaders about the possibility of intensifying military operations against Hezbollah. While Israel has not confirmed its involvement in these attacks, the escalation has heightened tensions between the two nations.

What is Hezbollah?

Hezbollah, a Shiite militant group, was founded in the 1980s following Israel’s invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon. The group emerged in response to Israel’s efforts to dismantle the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that was based in Lebanon at the time. Hezbollah has since grown into a significant military and political force, opposing Israel and influencing Lebanese and regional politics.

The ongoing conflict and potential for a wider war could have severe consequences for Lebanon, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and further destabilizing the region. The international community watches closely as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to rise.
