In a historic recognition of patriotism and cultural preservation, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a Special Honor for Serving Maldivian Nationalism to be conferred upon the people of Utheemu, Haa Alif Atoll.
According to the President’s Office, this distinguished honor is being awarded in appreciation of the community’s long-standing dedication to the upkeep and preservation of the Utheemu Palace—a national heritage site that stands as a powerful symbol of Maldivian independence and resistance. The palace, over 500 years old, was once the residence of Sultan al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-A’z'am, the national hero who led the successful resistance against Portuguese rule.
The honor will be formally conferred at the official National Day ceremony, scheduled to be held tomorrow at 10:00 AM in Haa Alif Utheemu. The event is part of the broader National Day celebrations, which commemorate the victory of Sultan Thakurufaanu and the end of 15 years and 6 months of foreign occupation.
