President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government aims to complete and fully operationalize Hanimaadhoo International Airport by November 2025, reinforcing its commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in the region.

Speaking during a community meeting in Hanimaadhoo as part of his tour of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of the airport project in enhancing regional connectivity and boosting the local economy. He assured residents that the airport will be ready to handle international flights by the set deadline.

To support expanding airport services, the President revealed plans to open a Bank of Maldives (BML) counter at the airport, enabling passengers to conveniently purchase US dollars for international travel. In addition, a dollar ATM will be installed outside the terminal, alongside BML and Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) rufiyaa ATMs, to improve access to local and foreign currency for residents and tourists alike.

Beyond airport development, the President announced several key infrastructure projects in Hanimaadhoo:

• Construction of 500 housing units, to be handed over to Housing Development Corporation (HDC) next month. This initiative aims to accommodate residents relocating from the nearby island of Hirimaradhoo.
• Development of a 30-bed hospital, a new police station, and a fitness and recreation center, with construction set to begin tomorrow.
• Signing of an agreement for a new school building for Hanimaadhoo School, highlighting the government’s focus on educational infrastructure.

President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s dedication to delivering rapid, people-centered development and improving the quality of life for island communities.
