The People’s Majlis has voted to remove Hussain Shameem from his position as Prosecutor General (PG), despite Shameem's voluntary resignation during the parliamentary session convened for his dismissal.

During a special session held last evening, where the primary agenda was the removal of Shameem, the PG unexpectedly resigned from his post. However, Dhiggaru MP and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim announced that the resignation letter had not been officially received by Parliament.

Despite opposition members’ assertions that Shameem had resigned voluntarily, the Speaker confirmed that the resignation letter was not in Parliament’s possession. This led to a parliamentary vote, with 65 members in favor of removing Shameem from office and only nine voting against his dismissal.

The decision to remove Shameem followed a complaint from PNC MP Mohammed Shahid of the Hulhudhoo constituency, who had raised concerns about Shameem’s conduct.

Shameem, who was appointed to the role in 2019 with the support of 74 members in the then-parliament, was nearing the end of his term, which was set to expire in just three months.
