Mass Inspection in Hulhumale’ Targets Illegal Migration

The Maldives Immigration Service conducted a significant mass inspection in Hulhumale’ on September 29, 2024, as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal migration. Over 200 immigration officers participated in this operation, which was supported by officials from the police, Economic Ministry, Health Protection Agency (HPA), and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA).
During the inspection, which took place between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, authorities searched 314 properties and questioned 769 expatriate workers. As a result of the operation, 28 expatriates were detained, including some who were fugitives. Additionally, notices were issued to another 165 expatriates, requiring them to present themselves at the agency’s headquarters due to visa issues.
In a broader effort to combat illegal employment, 92 Maldivian employers were served written warnings for employing expatriate workers unlawfully. Immigration authorities emphasized that failure to comply with these notices could result in penalties.
The Immigration Service has indicated that such mass inspections will become a regular practice to effectively address illegal migration, mitigate its impact on the country's economy and social structure, and enforce immigration laws.
