Immigration authorities in the Maldives have detained at least 15 foreign nationals involved in preparing and selling unsafe food. This action is part of a larger crackdown on illegal immigration and businesses operating without proper hygiene standards.
The detentions occurred following a joint operation by the police and the Ministry of Health, which was triggered by a tip-off regarding unsanitary food practices at a business operated by foreigners. On August 24, a search was conducted at Henveiru Bianca, leading to the apprehension of 15 individuals residing illegally in the country. The authorities have issued orders to cease the business operations at this location.
Additionally, a recent raid by the task force uncovered disturbing practices, including the preparation of food using cat meat. This revelation came after a social media post by a welfare organization dedicated to caring for stray cats, which raised public concern and led to the investigation.
The detained individuals will face deportation, and the authorities are continuing to monitor and address illegal activities within the food industry.
