Key Members of Tax Appeal Tribunal Dismissed Amid Corruption Allegations
27 August 2024 - 05:34

President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu has removed four key members from the Tax Appeal Tribunal, including the President, Vice President, and two members. The dismissed individuals are:
1. Mohamed Munawwar Ali – President
2. Hussain Zaidan Jaleel – Vice President
3. Ahmed Ashraf – Member
4. Hadhija Naeem – Member
This decision follows a review by the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee, which on May 13 approved a recommendation to refer the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The referral was based on allegations of abuse of office and the accumulation of undue wealth by the tribunal members.
The parliamentary panel’s investigation highlighted concerns about misconduct and financial impropriety within the Tax Appeal Tribunal. As part of the reforms, an amendment has been proposed to address the financial burden associated with the tribunal's operations. The proposal suggests reducing costs by utilizing the existing office space more efficiently, as the current building is deemed more than adequate.
Additionally, the amendments include changes to the tribunal’s rules, specifically modifying the president's authority to appoint and preside over tribunal cases. These proposed changes aim to enhance oversight and prevent potential abuses of power.
Following the dismissals, Ismail Sajid remains the sole member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal. The committee’s recommendations and proposed amendments have received strong support and were passed with a significant majority.
The restructuring of the Tax Appeal Tribunal reflects ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and integrity within Maldivian institutions, as the government seeks to address corruption and improve governance.
