In a parliamentary session yesterday, Ibrahim Mohamed, the Member for Machangolhi North Constituency, criticized the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for its past failures in revenue generation, which he claims led the state to incur substantial debts. His remarks came during a discussion on the Tax Reform Bill, in response to comments made by MDP members expressing concerns over the proposed legislation.
Mohamed emphasized that the inability of the MDP to generate revenue during their time in power forced the government to rely on large loans, which has significantly impacted the nation’s finances. "This revenue-generating bill is one that some opposition members are concerned about. That's understandable, because during their rule, due to their inability to generate revenue, the state had to take on large loans and incur debt," he stated.
He underscored the current government's commitment to introducing various bills aimed at enhancing state revenue, emphasizing that the Tax Reform Bill is crucial for the well-being of the people. "There's no doubt that this tax bill is truly a bill that will increase revenue for the state," he added, asserting that the government's focus is on sustainable financial practices that benefit the entire population.
The discussion highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling government and the opposition, as debates around fiscal policies continue to shape the country’s economic landscape.
