In a rare and contentious interview with Fox News, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the urgent need to repair the United States’ immigration system, asserting that it remains “broken” and in desperate need of reform.

During her discussion with host Bret Baier, Harris outlined the administration's efforts to enhance the asylum process, bolster border security, and combat the smuggling of fentanyl. She accused former President Donald Trump of undermining bipartisan immigration reform during his tenure, which she argued has exacerbated the current challenges facing the system.

"The point is that we have a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired," Harris stated firmly. Baier interjected, citing data from the Homeland Security Secretary that indicated 85% of apprehensions at the border. Harris insisted on finishing her point, stating, "I was beginning to answer. It's a rough estimate that 6 million people have been released into the country."

Baier pressed Harris on the administration's decision to reverse key Trump-era policies, including the controversial "Remain in Mexico" policy. Under this policy, illegal immigrants were required to wait in Mexico for their court hearings rather than being released into the United States. Harris faced scrutiny regarding the implications of releasing individuals who later committed serious crimes while awaiting trial.

Harris responded by reiterating that her administration recognized the necessity for immigration reform from the outset. "At the beginning of our administration, within practically hours of taking the oath, the first bill was a bill to fix our immigration system," she noted, emphasizing a commitment to addressing the complex issues at hand.

Despite the contentious nature of the interview, Harris remained resolute in her stance that comprehensive immigration reform is crucial for the country's future. She called on Congress to work together to create effective solutions that reflect the nation’s values and address the realities of a changing world.

As the Biden administration continues to face challenges related to immigration policy, the call for reform remains a significant topic of discussion in Washington, with both parties navigating a complex landscape that intertwines national security, humanitarian concerns, and political implications.
