Federal authorities are investigating fires at ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, that occurred over the weekend. Multnomah County Elections Director Tim Scott confirmed that fire suppression systems protected nearly all ballots in the Portland box, although three were damaged. Affected voters will be contacted for replacement ballots.
In Vancouver, another drop box was set on fire at a bus station, with a "suspicious device" found nearby. Hundreds of ballots were impacted in this incident. Laura Shepard, spokeswoman for Vancouver, advised anyone who submitted ballots in the affected box to report any concerns.
Officials are urging voters who submitted ballots between 3:30 PM Saturday and 3 PM Monday to reach out to the Multnomah County Elections Division for assistance. Despite the incidents, officials assure voters that their ballots will still be counted.
