Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has announced that the Maldivian government recently pitched its comprehensive proposal to PayPal to secure access to the financial technology company's services in the Maldives. In an appearance on Public Service Media (PSM)’s ‘Raajje Miadhu’ program, Saeed expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with PayPal in the near future, though he could not provide a specific timeline for when the service will be available in the country.
Saeed highlighted that last month’s virtual meeting with Suzan Kereere, PayPal’s President for Global Marketing, focused on helping Maldives' e-commerce businesses address challenges related to receiving payments through PayPal. The meeting, facilitated in part by US government officials during Saeed's recent visit to Washington DC, was crucial in providing PayPal with a clearer understanding of the Maldivian market and its digital landscape.
Securing access to international online payment systems like PayPal was a key pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his campaign. PayPal, an American multinational financial technology company, offers an online payments system widely used across the globe, serving as a digital alternative to traditional methods such as checks and money orders.
