Ali ‘Dhangadey’ Ashfaq, the renowned former captain of the Maldivian national football team, has been appointed as the new Director-General of Muraidhooge, the official residence of the Parliament’s Speaker, Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Ashfaq’s appointment was confirmed by the Parliament’s communications director, Hassan Ziyau, who announced the news on Tuesday. The position was officially filled at the end of July, although details regarding the salary and other specifics have not been disclosed.

This appointment marks a significant shift for Ashfaq, who remains active in football despite the Maldivian football league currently being on a season break. Known for his impressive career on the field, Ashfaq has yet to formally retire from professional football.

The role of Director-General at Muraidhooge is a key position within the Speaker’s residence, overseeing various administrative and operational aspects. Ashfaq’s appointment follows the recent appointment of veteran journalist Adam ‘Mundoo’ Haleem as the Chief of Staff of the Speaker’s residence on July 25.

Ashfaq has frequently been seen at public events alongside Ibrahim Faisal, the country’s Tourism Minister and son of Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Notably, both Ashfaq and Faisal participated in celebrations in L. Funadhoo in April, commemorating Abdul Raheem’s election to Parliament.

Recognized as one of the Maldives’ most talented footballers, Ashfaq has had a distinguished career both domestically and internationally. In addition to his contributions to top Maldivian clubs, he also played for Malaysia’s PDRM FC. Ashfaq is celebrated for his scoring prowess, ranking third in GiveMeSport’s list of professional footballers with the most hat-tricks since 2000, with a remarkable 35 hat-tricks.
