Male, Maldives – Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi), spokesperson for The Democrats and former MP for Maafannu North constituency, has dismissed rumors of former President Mohamed Nasheed or other party leaders joining the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). His comments came during a press conference held today following the departure of three senior members of The Democrats to the MDP.

Leadership Departures

The Democrats recently lost three key members to the MDP, including Hassan Latheef, the party's president, and Mohamed Shifaz, its vice president. Former MP for Hulhuhenveiru constituency Ali Azim and Hussain Amr, the party's running mate in the 2023 presidential election, have also rejoined the MDP. These individuals had initially left the MDP due to internal disagreements ahead of the 2023 presidential election, leading to the formation of The Democrats under the leadership of former President Nasheed.

Inthi’s Reassurance

At the press conference held at Bodufenvage, Inthi addressed concerns about further defections, stating, "There are absolutely no discussions about former President Nasheed or any other political leader of the party leaving The Democrats to join MDP." He acknowledged the loss of members but expressed confidence in the party's future, emphasizing its commitment to presenting innovative policies and robust political work.

Inthi added, "This party will continue to be one that works diligently, conducts robust work, and presents sound policies to the people at a level unmatched by any other party in the Maldives. We will push forward with our efforts to increase party membership."

The Democrats’ Journey

The Democrats, established ahead of the 2023 presidential election, secured around 15,000 votes in the first round, becoming the third-highest vote-getter. Despite the recent departures, the party remains focused on its mission to bring new ideas and approaches to Maldivian politics.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, The Democrats aim to strengthen their position and expand their influence, even as they navigate the challenges of leadership changes and internal dynamics.
