The Democrats have appointed Hussein Firshan, former member for Madaveli constituency and one of the party’s vice presidents, as its interim president. The decision was made during a National Assembly meeting held last night following the resignation of former president Hassan Latheef, who has since joined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Election Details

Firshan secured 29 votes in the National Assembly, defeating fellow vice president Alaika Adnan, who received 14 votes. According to the party’s constitution, the interim president will serve until a permanent leader is elected.

Next Steps

The National Assembly also passed a resolution to hold an election for a permanent president within 50 days. This move aims to ensure stability and continuity within the party, which was founded by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Background

The leadership vacancy arose after Hassan Latheef, former member for Henveiru West, resigned on Sunday and joined the MDP. Firshan, a seasoned politician and one of the party’s vice presidents, will now oversee party operations until a new president is elected.

The Democrats emphasized their commitment to maintaining unity and focus during this transitional period.
