Maldives Launches Major Transport Network to Connect Rasmale, Giraavaru Falhu, and Gulhifalhu

The Maldivian government has announced an ambitious project to create an integrated transportation network connecting the key development zones of Rasmale, Giraavaru Falhu, and Gulhifalhu.
This initiative, led by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, aims to enhance regional connectivity and support the country's economic growth.
In an interview with PSM News, MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy outlined the project’s objectives. “Our primary goal is to develop efficient transport links that connect these important areas,” Saudhy said. He added that MTCC has adjusted bus service start times in Malé, moving them from 6 a.m. to 5 a.m. to better align with peak travel periods. The company is also conducting studies to gather data on peak hours and user numbers to further optimize the transport system.
Key Development Zones
The government’s infrastructure plans focus on several key areas:
- Rasmale: Positioned in Fushi Dhiggaru Lagoon, Rasmale is set to become an eco-friendly urban center designed to accommodate 65,000 residents. The development will emphasize sustainability and include modern transportation links to support housing and infrastructure growth.
- Thilafushi: Designated as the Maldives’ primary industrial hub, Thilafushi will support extensive manufacturing, warehousing, and industrial activities. The integration with the Thila-Malé bridge is expected to enhance logistical efficiency and contribute to industrial growth.
- Gulhifalhu: This mixed-use area will feature residential lots, public housing, and commercial facilities. Its strategic location and expanding commercial harbor are intended to foster economic decentralization from Malé and establish it as a significant business center.
- Giraavaru Falhu: This zone will be crucial for linking the other areas, ensuring seamless travel and boosting economic activity across the region.
Thilamale Bridge: A Major Infrastructure Element
A cornerstone of the transport network is the Thilamale Bridge, valued at over USD 454 million. Spanning 6.7 kilometers, the bridge is currently 40.47% complete. It is projected to enhance connectivity between Malé and Gulhifalhu, with the full completion expected by September 2026. Efforts are underway to accelerate the timeline, aiming for completion by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
Economic and Development Impact
The new transport network is expected to drive significant economic growth by improving productivity, reducing travel times, and supporting sustainable development across the Maldives. By linking Malé, Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi with a well-integrated public transport system, the project aims to facilitate efficient movement between key locations and support the country's long-term growth strategy.
As the Maldives advances its infrastructure development, this comprehensive transport network will play a crucial role in unlocking the nation’s full economic potential and addressing key challenges such as housing and regional connectivity.
