President Donald Trump has directed federal officials to create a plan for declassifying documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said, “A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long time—years, decades. And everything will be revealed.”
The order instructs senior administration officials to present a declassification plan within 15 days, potentially opening up new information on three of the most consequential and controversial killings in U.S. history.
John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in 1963. Five years later, his brother Robert F. Kennedy was killed in Los Angeles, California, while campaigning for the presidency. Just two months earlier, Martin Luther King Jr., a central figure in the civil rights movement, was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
While some records related to these events have been made public over the years, many remain classified, fueling conspiracy theories and public calls for transparency.
The move to release these files could provide greater clarity on the circumstances surrounding the assassinations. However, the process may face challenges, including national security concerns and opposition from intelligence agencies.
The forthcoming declassification could mark a significant step in addressing decades-old questions about these historical tragedies.
