President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended his to Sri Lanka's newly elected president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, on Sunday. In a post on X, Muizzu expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Dissanayake to strengthen the historic ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
"Wishing you immense success in your new role," Muizzu wrote, highlighting his optimism that this new presidential era will bring about the progressive changes desired by the Sri Lankan people.
The Sri Lankan elections commission officially announced Dissanayake's victory earlier, marking a significant achievement in his 20-year political career. He faced off against formidable opponents, including Sajith Premadasa, the son of former president Ranasinghe Premadasa.
Dissanayake secured approximately 42.31 percent of the vote, while Premadasa received 32.76 percent. The current president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, garnered only 17.27 percent, and Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son, Namal Rajapaksa, received a mere 2.57 percent, indicating a lack of support among the electorate.
As the Maldives looks to enhance its diplomatic relations in the region, the collaboration between the two leaders promises to build on the strong foundation of friendship that has existed between their nations.
