President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to stay away from tobacco use, labeling it as one of the primary causes of cancer, on the occasion of World Cancer Day. In a social media post, the President emphasized the importance of resolving to eliminate this harmful habit, recognizing its significant role in the rising cancer rates globally.

The President’s message underscored the theme for this year's World Cancer Day, "United by Unique," noting that while each individual’s journey with cancer is different, the global community stands united in the fight against the disease.

Dr. Muizzu assured the public that the government remains committed to tackling cancer and improving public health by continuing its efforts to establish a specialized cancer center and expanding palliative care services across the country. He noted that these initiatives aim to enhance early cancer detection and improve the quality of life for individuals facing cancer.

“The Maldives is on track to achieve the international and regional goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health concern by 2030,” the President affirmed. He also highlighted that cancer screenings for five types of cancer are now available at island and atoll levels through primary health care services.

In addition to these efforts, the President pointed to national measures being introduced to reduce cancer risks, including the ban on electronic cigarettes, the strengthening of laws and policies to combat tobacco use, and the provision of free healthcare services for individuals seeking help to quit smoking.

Dr. Muizzu also took a moment to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer and expressed solidarity with those currently battling the disease. He thanked health sector workers, associations, international partners, cancer advocates, and the community for their continued support in fighting the disease.

As part of the government’s ongoing efforts, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported that more than 1,600 individuals have been registered in the cancer registry in Malé. Plans to expand this registry to include cancer patients in the atolls will begin later this year.

World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4th to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. The President’s message serves as a reminder of the government’s dedication to building a healthier and more prosperous nation, united in the battle against cancer.
