On the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives held a significant meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a strong and friendly relationship between their nations.

During the discussions, they explored various avenues for cooperation, particularly in trade, education, and tourism. Both leaders emphasized the potential for increasing direct flights between the Maldives and Pakistan, which could further enhance bilateral connectivity.

Prime Minister Sharif praised the Maldives' advancements in the tourism sector and expressed interest in leveraging this expertise to boost tourism development in Pakistan. Climate change adaptation and strategies for strengthening bilateral ties were also key topics of conversation.

This meeting marks the first direct engagement between the leaders of the Maldives and Pakistan in several years. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih did not meet with Prime Minister Sharif during his term, nor did he engage with previous Prime Minister Imran Khan. The last encounter between a Maldivian president and a Pakistani prime minister occurred during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, when then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited the Maldives.

The dialogue between President Muizzu and Prime Minister Sharif signifies a renewed commitment to collaboration and partnership, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing mutual challenges.
