Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has announced that the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is scheduled for inauguration by December this year, marking a pivotal advancement for the Maldives’ tourism industry. This announcement was made in conjunction with World Tourism Day, highlighting the terminal's role in the broader airport modernization project.
In his message, Minister Faisal emphasized that the new terminal is essential for the growth of the Maldives’ tourism sector, which currently generates approximately USD 4.5 billion for the state. The government aims to increase this figure to USD 6 billion by 2027. Operations at the new terminal are expected to commence in December, with the entire airport projected to be fully operational by the first or second quarter of next year.
The existing international terminal at VIA has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers annually. In contrast, the new 78,000-square-meter terminal will feature state-of-the-art facilities, increasing capacity to accommodate up to 7 million passengers each year. Key features of the new terminal include:
- Aero Boarding Bridges: Enhancing passenger convenience and safety.
- Advanced Baggage Handling Systems: Streamlining luggage processing.
- Expanded Amenities: More space for food and beverage outlets, retail shops, lounges, and additional services to improve the overall travel experience.
Minister Faisal also underscored the importance of attracting more airlines to operate flights to the Maldives once the new terminal opens. He indicated that the government plans to collaborate with the tourism sector on targeted marketing campaigns to capitalize on this opportunity, aiming to boost occupancy rates and enhance tourist spending.
As preparations continue for the terminal's launch, this significant development is expected to further solidify the Maldives' position as a premier travel destination in the Indian Ocean region.
